Bukit Brown was a cemetery for pioneering Chinese immigrants in the mid-19th century and a WWII battleground and gravesite for casualties, including victims of the Japanese occupation. Now, the green oasis at the heart of an urban environment is the lush home to over 90 resident and migratory bird species, 13 of which are endangered. Join ANZA on a guided walk with the ‘Brownies’, volunteer guides who independently research the heritage, habitat and history of the area.

While enjoying the natural beauty, you’ll hear stories on Chinese traditional funeral practices, symbolism and tomb design as well as Bukit Brown's involvement in the fall of Singapore in WWII. It is a unique location in time and space, reflecting the influences of British colonialism and China on today’s Singapore. Construction of a new eight-lane highway is underway, so take this opportunity to visit one of the most culturally rich pockets in Singapore before the landscape is irrevocably changed.

Dress for a light trek through bushland, wear covered shoes, sunblock and insect repellent and take drinking water. Please note there are no toilet facilities nearby.
